Indie Review of the week by Dr. Tim Stanfield
Title: “White Sky”
Creative Team: William Harms and Jean Paul Mavinga with colors by Lee Loughridge and lettering by Ed Dukeshire
Publisher: Image Comics
Synopsis: “Five years after the sky turned white and the world was destroyed by ghosts, a teenager named violet and her father travel across a savage haunted landscape searching for safety.”
White Sky by William Harms (Mafia III game writer) and Jean Paul Mavinga is a post-apocalyptic ghost story that jumps straight into the action. The story centers around a father and daughter who are fleeing an entity that we are not made immediately aware of. There is a sense of urgency in the pacing, and the plot quickly advances leaving no question of the stakes. It foregoes character development for immediate action, and you feel as if you are jumping into a story that has already been mired with trauma. The art is character focused with an attention to detail that allows you to really experience the journey. Its use of blank space filled with white backgrounds draws your eye to the facial expressions and body language of the characters depicted without feeling overly empty. That being said the artist doesn’t shy away from vibrant spreads when required particularly once the threats are revealed. As someone who reads their fair share of independent titles, white sky issue 2 is my most anticipated issue number 2 of the bunch. For those that missed the first print fear not second printing is inbound and will be on Snake Eyes shelves on 03/18.
