Batwoman 1-2 short spoiler-free review by Robby O'Daniel
It's a welcome sight to see writer Greg Rucka return to the character that he modernized and redefined earlier this century: Batwoman.
And while the new series carries relaunched numbering, it definitely feels like a continuation. In issue one, released in March, Batwoman's origin is hinted at but not fully explained. And new readers could be a little lost in regard to Kate Kane's relationship to her sister.
New readers are advised to pick up the DC Compact Comics edition of Batwoman: Elegy, available at Snake Eyes Comics for the wallet-friendly price of $9.99. Also written by Rucka, it's probably the most famous Batwoman story ever, and it features gorgeous art from J.H. Williams III.
Indeed, as someone who has not read Batwoman's series in a while, I also felt a little lost in where Kate's character is at the moment. We will see how necessary that context is going forward.
Artist Dani has big shoes to fill in the new series, and the art is solid. The cover to issue one, in particular, is striking. Issue two moves things further in an extreme direction for Kate, and much of the first two issues raise questions to be answered down the line. Rucka is a writer you can trust to do so in a satisfying manner.
